What makes a wedding cake great?
It’s not just the taste - the moist, flavorful cake with the buttercream frosting – that is a minimum requirement. It’s the added talent to make the cake an artful masterpiece, the ability to connect with the couple and make them feel special, and the quality of service provided.
There are 4 bakeries that I believe make the best wedding cakes in Kansas City – and they just happen to be award-winning, women-owned businesses.
Jayne Torline and Stacey Webb, owners
Couples rave about their tastings at this bakery. The staff is friendly and fully engaged with the couple in wanting to create a unique cake for each wedding. 3 Women and an Oven is flexible and willing to change to meet your needs, like adjusting the size and quantity of the order at the last minute when the number of guests expected at the wedding changes. If you are having a small elegant wedding, they offer beautiful cakes that serve 30 people at a reasonable price. And, as an added bonus, they offer a fresh cake on the 1 year anniversary, in case the original one gets freezer burn.
Erin Brown, owner
Dolce cakes are original works of art. The naked chocolate cake with the pomegranates on the cover of KC Weddings magazine a few months ago was drool worthy! Beautiful and delicious. All cakes are baked from scratch, of course – no pre-made mixes here! And let’s not forget to mention Aunt Cindy’s breakfast cinnamon rolls! This bakery is not only about cakes. Couples having an inexpensive wedding may choose an assortment of cookies and cupcakes instead. Erin also makes sure her bakery is active in the community, participating in fundraisers and building goodwill for her business.
Renea Feagin, owner
The intricate details on the cakes at Baked Expressions are remarkable. Renea decorates her cakes with lace, diamonds, and pearls! And talk about award-winning! Baked Expressions has won top awards from all of the leading wedding experts. Couples write glowing reviews about her superior customer service. It’s all about making people feel special on their big day!
Afi Green, owner
Have you seen her Geode Cakes? Amazing! But, you would expect no less from a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu School of Culinary Arts. Afi makes bite-sized versions of her wonderful cakes, cupcake bouquets, cake pops, and cake donuts as an idea for small weddings when a large cake would be too much or the couple desires a little variety. This bakery is forward-thinking and offers gluten free and vegetarian cakes for people with dietary restrictions.
